When a person travels, there are things they must know about staying at hotels. Aside from the different types of accommodations available, many accommodations offer different types of amenities, such as pools, golf and spas. Travelers often search for accommodations that suit their particular needs, such as business travel, vacation and family travel and there is plenty to learn about staying in hotels of each caliber.

The first thing any traveler needs to know is that every hotel requires a credit card for incidentals. While it is perfectly fine to pay cash for a hotel, until checkout it is required that guests used a debit or credit card of some sort to pay for incidentals. Incidentals are considered items like mini bar purchases, room charges at the hotel restaurants or shops as well as a fee for any damage inflicted onto the room. A hold is placed on a person’s card until after the person checks out and the room is cleaned. If nothing is missing or damaged or charged to the person’s room, the hold is released.

Additionally, many accommodations offer travelers a variety of parking methods. Self-parking is something everyone is familiar with; travelers drive in and park their own car each time they leave and return. Valet parking is the other option. When people valet park they pull up to the front of the hotel and a valet opens the doors of the car and parks it and retrieves it for the driver. The cost difference for valet parking and self parking at many establishments vary, but when a person valets they do need to tip the person that retrieves their car for them each time the leave the hotel. Additionally, drivers that valet park should keep the valet ticket given to them so they can use the number on it to call down to valet from their room and ask for their car; the valet will need the reference number on the ticket.

Another thing that is crucial for travelers to know is the check in and check out times their hotel uses. Each one is different, though typically at most hotels, check in is around 3 pm and check out is around 11 am. This means that while a guest can check in prior to the listed check in time, they are not guaranteed a room until after check in time. Additionally, the time that a guest is required to check out is imperative; guests can call down to the front desk and request a late checkout time, but many hotels charge a fee for this and others only allow it if no one else is booked to stay in that room the same day.

Traveling should always be fun, which is why knowing what to expect from a hotel prior to arriving makes the trip less stressful. Additionally, knowing what types of fees and other services are offered by the hotel gives people the chance to decide what they want to do regarding each prior to arriving.
